Point your domain at us: any other host

Two small changes at your domain host make your domain show the new site. About ten minutes, no technical knowledge needed.

Steps to verify. We could not open every part of this help material, so check each screen against these words and message us if it looks different.

What you are changing

You are changing two DNS records, which are the entries that tell the internet where your domain lives. An A record covers the bare domain (yourbusiness.com.au). A CNAME record covers the www version. The values to enter are [we send you these two values].

Before you start

  • Sign in to wherever you pay for the domain. You need the login for the account that holds the domain. If someone else set it up, ask them for it, or ask them to follow this page.
  • Check the domain's expiry date while you are in there. If it is close, renew it now.
  • Your email keeps working. We do not touch MX records, which are the ones that carry email.

The steps

  1. Sign in to the company that holds your domain.
  2. Find the page called DNS, DNS Management, Zone Editor or Advanced DNS. It is usually inside the domain's settings.
  3. Add a record of type A. For the name or host, use @ (or leave it blank). Paste our first value.
  4. Add a record of type CNAME. For the name or host, use www. Paste our second value.
  5. If there is already an A record for the bare domain or a CNAME for www, change it instead of adding another.
  6. Save.

We have no single help page for this one, because every host words things a little differently. That is why it is marked to verify. If your host only offers nameserver changes and no record editing, message us.

How long it takes

Usually a few minutes. Sometimes up to a day while the change spreads across the internet. Nothing is lost in the meantime: visitors see either the old site or the new one.

How to check

Type your domain into a browser, with and without the www. When both show the new site, you are done. Or just ask us, and we will check from our side.

If your host also hosts your old site

Leave it alone. It switches off by itself once the records change. Do not cancel anything until we say the new site is live.

Not sure?

Message us and we will do it with you on a ten-minute call. Get in touch.
