Point your GoDaddy domain at us

Two small changes at GoDaddy make your domain show the new site. About ten minutes, no technical knowledge needed.

Steps to verify. We could not open every part of GoDaddy's help material, so check each screen against these words and message us if it looks different.

What you are changing

You are changing two DNS records, which are the entries that tell the internet where your domain lives. An A record covers the bare domain (yourbusiness.com.au). A CNAME record covers the www version. The values to enter are [we send you these two values].

Before you start

  • Sign in at godaddy.com/en-au. You need the login for the account that holds the domain. If someone else set it up, ask them for it, or ask them to follow this page.
  • Check the domain's expiry date while you are in there. If it is close, renew it now.
  • Your email keeps working. We do not touch MX records, which are the ones that carry email.

The steps

  1. Sign in to your GoDaddy account.
  2. Open your Domain Portfolio.
  3. Click your domain name.
  4. Click DNS.
  5. Click Add New Record. Choose A as the type. Type @ in the Name box and paste our first value into the Value box.
  6. If a record of type A for @ already exists (often one that says "Parked"), edit it instead of adding a second one.
  7. Click Add New Record again. Choose CNAME, type www in the Name box and paste our second value. If a www CNAME already exists, edit it.
  8. Click Save. GoDaddy may ask for a code from your phone or email. Enter it.

GoDaddy only lets you edit these records if the domain uses GoDaddy's own nameservers. If the DNS page says something else, tell us and we will sort it.

How long it takes

Usually a few minutes. Sometimes up to a day while the change spreads across the internet. Nothing is lost in the meantime: visitors see either the old site or the new one.

How to check

Type your domain into a browser, with and without the www. When both show the new site, you are done. Or just ask us, and we will check from our side.

If GoDaddy also hosts your old site

Leave it alone. It switches off by itself once the records change. Do not cancel anything until we say the new site is live.

Not sure?

Message us and we will do it with you on a ten-minute call. Get in touch.
